Syndicate Pilot John Humphries turn finals at Raglan Airfield. - Jan 08.
Nanchang 01 was imported into Australia in 1990 and is the first Nanchang to appear on a civil register anywhere in the world. The aircraft was purchased by Graeme Frew in Sept. 2000 and on the 7th and 8th of November that year was flown to New Zealand via Coffs Harbour (NSW), Lord Howe Island, and Norfolk Island to Auckland. The total flight time was 10 hours 50 min and the longest leg was 4 hours 50 min and 600 NM. The CJ6A is powered by a Chinese made Huosai 6A 9 cylinder air cooled radial engine which is supercharged and developes 285 HP. Used by the Chinese Airforce as an advanced trainer the Nanchangs have become the west's favourite warbird. 01 is currently based at Dairy Flat Airfield just North of Auckland.

The aircraft uses pneumatics for flaps, undercarriage, brakes and engine starting. Normal airpressure is between 40 and 50 atmospheres with a min. of 20 atmospheres for an engine start. If the pressure falls too low them it can be restored by the use of a dive bottle which plugs into the side of the aircraft. Flying costs are on an air meter which only starts charging when the aircraft becomes airborne. With its 10 litre supercharged radial engine the Nanchang can climb to 17,000 feet.
This aircraft has new two pack paint, a new ss exhaust, new canopy glass, the lowest time engine in the country, a reconned prop, new oil lines and remote filter plus much more. It's 4900 hr airframe was fully rebuilt by the Chinese Air Force at 4000 hrs. It is fully aerobatic, has tandem seats, dual controls, a generous baggage area and 2 1/2 hrs fuel .
